Read The Book On Becoming Babywise

By Marci Glover

New parents often face tremendous challenges. Nothing in the world can prepare them for the shock of caring for a new baby. The responsibility is overwhelming and many people find themselves not getting enough sleep. After only a few weeks they feel that their lives have been totally taken over by the babies needs and they often become depressed or resentful. This is not a healthy state of affairs for anyone and the entire family will suffer.

Modern parents need all the help they can get. Traditionally people lived close to family and there was always someone to help. That may mean taking the baby for a few hours, bringing over some food or helping with the older children. In today's frantic world many parents simply do not have a support network in place. Instead they try to muddle through on their own or turn to books for help. The latest baby book to really cause a stir has been On Becoming Babywise.

The book was authored by Theologian Gary Ezzo and pediatrician Robert Bucknam. They felt that it was quite possible to get young babies onto a clear feeding and sleeping schedule starting when they were only a few weeks old. This will ensure a good nights sleep for the parents and a happy and harmonious household.

The book emphasizes a fifty two week plan that moves in phases. The first stage begin in the first eight weeks of life and is called stabilizing. The premise is that it is never too early to start getting a routine in place. This is in fact a very good idea. By the time parents are exhausted and the baby has already developed a poor routine it can be very difficult to correct it.

The book also argues that some crying is natural for a baby and should not be taken too seriously. They feel it is perfectly fine to allow a baby a few minuets of crying to get themselves to sleep without being picked up. Just about every parent knows how difficult it is to ignore a crying baby and this can be very difficult for many parents.

Many parents have tried the Babywise method and taken the time to post their comments and reviews. On the whole most people found the advice very helpful. They were often struggling with establishing a routine for both sleep and feedings. The book shows them that it is never too early to start working on both these issues. Many people had success within a matter of days and this encouraged them to stay with the program. The book sets out a clear plan for the first year of life, with stages of expectation for the young child.

However, as the book is very inexpensive it is worth reading. It can be ordered from the big internet sites for around ten dollars. Used copies are available for much less. Shipping only takes a day or two. Many exhausted parents have been happy to read the book and follow the guidelines.

The Babywise method is very valuable for those who do not have their own parents nearby to help them. In today's busy world families are often living hundreds or even thousands of miles apart. The traditional parenting networks have broken down and this book helps to fill a serious void.
