By Tammie Caldwell

The word veterinary is normally shortened to vet. Veterinary physicians are professionals who specialize in and practice veterinary medicine. They diagnose, prevent, treat, and study disorders, injuries, and diseases in animals only, not human beings. According to British English, they are also referred to veterinary surgeons. Veterinary physician is commonly used in American and Australian English. Any veterinarian in Huntington Beach is well trained and qualified to handle a wide range of issues.

Most states regulate and protect how the title veterinarian is used within its borders. One has to have specific training in that field in order to be referred to by that title. Practitioners can only practice veterinary medicine after completing formal education, receiving a license and being registered. It is a grave legal offense to practice without the right qualification and certification and the penalty involved is normally huge.

In most circumstance, veterinarians treat animals directly in clinical settings. Some workers may choose to specialize in a given category of animals while others deal with all animals without preference of any category of animals. Animal categories include livestock, equines, companion animals, and zoo animals.

Veterinarians handle several and diverse responsibilities. In general, they are concerned with offering diagnosis services, treating medical conditions, and providing aftercare. Type of intervention given varies with the level of experience and qualification of the practitioner. However, despite of disparities experience and qualification, surgery seems to be the most preferred intervention option. Lack of speech in animals makes physicians to heavily rely on clinical signs to treat them.

There are many common aspects between traditional and veterinary medical care. The first similarity is that both field emphasize prophylactic treatment a lot in order to prevent and avoid future ailments. Vaccines are used widely for this purpose. Dental illnesses are also avoided through dental prophylaxis. Pet owner education is also an approach used to avoid future disease outbreaks.

Like other fields of study, veterinary medicine also has specialties in which practitioners can specialize. Some of the general topics covered by specialties include dentistry, surgery, and anesthesia. Some focus may also be given to organ systems under specialties like dermatology and cardiology. Unlike traditional medicine, veterinary medicine combines surgical and medical aspects of biological systems.

Most veterinarians in the US work in the private sector. Statistics state that over 75 percent of all practitioners in this field are employed in the private sector. Those who treat small animals may work in veterinary schools and hospitals or both. Those who treat large animals get employment in places like zoos, colleges, animal food companies, charities, pharmaceutical companies, and farms. Some also specialize in research so that they work in research facilities studying animals.

Professionals in this field earn fairly good salaries. Those with more experience and higher academic achievement generally earn more. Private sector workers earn more than those in the public service. Currently there is an ongoing debate about various cosmetic issues such as debarking of dogs, docking of tails, declawing of cats, and cropping of ears.
