Why Fire Department Training Classes Can Be Suitable For You

By Mattie MacDonald

Seeing them ride on the back of trucks or climb tall ladders, becoming a fire fighter one day make the dream of many children. Some grow up and the desire fades as they develop new dreams. For a few however, the wish to serve humanity still persists regardless of age or profession. If you are that kind of person and you feel it is time to go for it, the first step is registering for fire department training classes to start your course.

Evidently, this is one of the industries experiencing most rapid growth. Multitudes of citizens apply every year for the limited chances in these institutions. The coordinators are therefore forced to pick only the best while rejecting others. The love does not merely emanate from the fact that the profession is good paying.

Prospective applicants are required to possess high school diploma. However, institutions prefer to recruit those with at least two years college education. Currently, the bar has also been raised because now more than ever, university graduates are applying as well. People with certificates or degrees in disaster management and medical fields definitely get an upper hand since such skills are highly crucial in this part.

Directors tend to lean towards such people with extra abilities. The process does not end there. Applicants who have impressed the selection committee have to undergo further elimination tests. Physical abilities for instance are crucial in this profession.

Majority give up, but if anyone is able to pass all these then he or she is fit enough. In addition to physical capabilities, the mental status of a person is also taken into consideration. Student will be asked to demonstrate how they would react to a fire outbreak under different situations. Essay writing skills will be put to test as one might be required to report an occurrence.

In addition, persons who follow instructions, cooperate with colleagues, and easily forge good relations with those around them will have an added advantage. The training procedure is very exhaustive. It involves a lot of exercise, both mental and physical. Real time fires are created using straws and other fuels where students are shown how important coordination is in maintenance of safety and operation of hoses.

Institutions usually acquire abandoned buildings or construct their own for such purposes. Many are however shifting to simulated buildings, which are considered much safer and easier to operate. These structures are monitored and controlled by computers. In case a trainee makes a mistake for example by positioning a hose wrongly, the devices are able to detect and respond in the same way it would happen during a real outbreak.

When one completes training, he or she may decide to take fire fighting as a full time profession or become a volunteer. The former will require further training and application for licence. Volunteers on the other hand can pursue other professions and only be called upon for assistance during emergencies.
