Useful Information About Australian Labradoodles

By Deanne Shepard

Labradoodle is a crossbreed between standard poodles and Labrador retrievers. The term labradoodle was originally used in 1955, although 1989 was when first purposeful breeding took place. The source f the name is that first breeding happened in Australia. The breeding project was managed by Wally Conron. Late 80s is when the term gained more use after the species started being used widely as an allergen-free guide dog.

Current breeder organizations and fanciers do not consider the dog as a breed and not all of them are hypoallergenic. However, that is a quality that many people look for in the dog. Since strictly speaking no dog is totally hypoallergenic, the term is applied loosely in most contexts. Breeding is mostly done between the original breeds although some breeders use Australian labradoodles for breeding in an attempt to create a new breed.

Although their original parents are both used for hunting purposes, labradoodles have not been used for that purpose. The main reason why they were developed is to be service dogs for people with different physical disabilities. They exhibit easy trainability like Labrador retrievers and relatively low hypoallergenic and slow-shedding like poodles. If well bred and trained, the dog can be a loveable pet as well as an unflappable service dog.

There are three key size variations of this type of dog. The size of the first-generation poodle determines that of subsequent off springs. The three size variations currently available on the market are standard, medium, and miniature. In all the size variations, males are larger and heavier than females. The height of standard size ranges between 21 and 24 inches while weight falls between 50 and 65 pounds. 17 to 20 inches is the height of medium category and their weight lies within the 30 to 45 pounds bracket.

The attractive characteristics exhibited by the canine make people to like it. It is well known for sociability, cheerful disposition, intelligence, level headedness, and affection. They show love to all members of the family and can be very playful when happy. Temperament is highly influenced by factors such as training, socialization, and heredity. It is good to choose puppies with average social ability. They should not be too aggressive or too shy either.

Generally speaking labradoodles are healthy dogs, although they are affected by certain diseases. Although some resist certain diseases and infections, others may be adversely affected by them. Some of the diseases to check out for include ear infections, hip dysplasia, epilepsy, elbow dysplasia, diabetes mellitus, hypothyroidism, progressive retinal atrophy, and various allergies. The breeder from whom the puppies are purchased should be able to show health clearances for the parent dogs.

This dog should be raised in apartments although they do well in the back yards. Daily exercise must be ensured for at least an hour. Excess energy is expelled during exercise. Failing to expel the excess energy causes the dog to become destructive. The dog is good for providing company when going for a jog or walk.

The animal should not be over-fed or under-fed. 1 to 2.5 cups of food is the recommended amount. The food should be dry and rich in nutrients or all kinds. Two meals are sufficient in a day.
