Managing Agricultural Waste: Reducing Flies & Odors

By Lianne Derocco

Dealing with agricultural waste is always a big issue for all types of livestock farmers. This includes handling swine waste management issues that occur in manure pits and manure lagoons. Two common problems include excessive odors and an abundance of flies. In the following article, we take a look at these two nuisances and discuss how to improve pig manure management at your hog farm.

Most hog farms and dairy farms consider flies to be a huge nuisance, but it's not just because people tend to view flies as an irritant in general. Flies definitely can be the cause of huge problems on a livestock farm. After all, these flying pests can carry infections, parasites and dangerous bacteria and viruses from one area of your farm to another. This agricultural waste management issue means that even if you have separated some sick animals and isolated them from the rest of your hog population; it still is possible to spread disease and illness.

Clearing manure quickly away from your animals can be one way to reduce the amount of flies near the animals themselves. The cleaner and drier you keep barns and stables, the less likely you are to be affected by flies. Fly traps and fly paper can be a good option as well for those on a small farm or hobby farm. Proper hog manure treatment also can reduce the amount of flies around your lagoon or waste pit.

Another typical issue is the odor generated by these animals, which obviously cannot be eliminated entirely. However, some types of pig manure treatments can lessen these odors which definitely benefit not just the animals and farm workers, but also the surrounding environment. The odors or gases products at a hog farm have been shown to be toxic and people living in areas near livestock farms often report an increase of issues such as having more colds and bronchial infections, as well as more problems with asthma, allergies and more. Some pig manure treatments have been shown to reduce these odors and gases.

Agra Sphere is a natural agricultural waste management product to consider. Not only does this help lessen the impact of flies and odors, it also handles other common pig manure issues such as foaming and the build-up of sludge and crust. This product, along with manure treatment products such as Digester-CF and Activator Plus work naturally to keep crusting and sludge from causing problems in all types of waste containment systems.

Aside from its effectiveness, Agra Sphere has several other advantages. For instance, the product uses only natural, proprietary bacteria to eat away at pig waste solids. There are no chemicals in the product. In addition, each of these spheres is biodegradable, so you need only toss in an adequate amount of spheres and the product will begin working immediately. No mixing is needed either, making this an easy to use product.
