DIY Handmade Christmas Wreaths For Decoration

By Katina Brady

The holidays are the perfect time of year to liven up the home with decorations, including, of course, the tree! Handmade Christmas wreaths are a wonderful way to bring the spirit of the season into the home and welcome visitors when they arrive at the door. Best of all, there are so many ideas on how to do it yourself, that it is sure to be unlike anything anyone has ever seen before.

Undoubtedly, there are certain colours that are naturally associated with Christmas, especially when put together. White is representative of the winter wonderland, while deep green hues are found in the winter trees and plants like mistletoe and holly. Then, of course, there is the deep red that is associated with Christmas, as poinsettias are in full bloom.

You don't have to worry about sticking to any particular set of colours for decorating. It has become quite trendy to use different colour schemes at this time of the year for whatever suits your personal aesthetic. That means that you can pretty much do whatever you like. This is really great for those areas in the world where Christmas in a traditional sense doesn't happen. For example, tropical countries will never experience snowfall and so certain aspects of the holidays don't apply to them.

Making a Christmas wreath is very easy with the right supplies. The most crucial part of a project like this is the foundation. This could be a doughnut shape cut out of cardboard, wood or foam. Wreath bases are easily found at art and craft store to save time and effort in making one. There are many different ways to begin the project, so it's a good idea to decide on what is the desired outcome in order to know how to begin.

You can get a grapevine wreath base in the craft store if you are thinking about making some sort of floral piece. Use plants like juniper or eucalyptus, or other seasonal things from nature like pine cones to keep in line with the theme. You can glue suitable decorations that may be larger in order to fill up any empty spaces in the leaves.

Old Christmas decorations can be recycled into something new by using them to cover a wreath base completely. The more shapes, sizes and colours, the better, as this will be a fun addition to the home or front door. Use baubles of all kinds to build up the size of the wreath and glue them on one by one. A wired ribbon woven through the bauble loops will add more volume.

Fabric or paper can also be used to decorate a wreath. Using different colours, or even just one key colour, gather up folded strips of fabric to create volume and then they can be strategically glued onto the form. Burlap is a great choice for a project like this and a huge red bow can be added at the top before hanging.

You can use whiter paper with black text on it to create something monochromatic. Think about using sheet music, perhaps of Christmas carols for the season. Create bows and loops with strips of the paper and add colour with holly, or a red ribbon to hang it.
