By Della Monroe

Writing your own inner thoughts and feelings has been used for a long time as partial treatment for numerous problems. Some of these conditions include those pertaining to emotional and physical aspects of the person. When used for the purpose of treating conditions, it is often called journal therapy. Psychologists use it with their patients along with other techniques but people can utilize it for this purpose by themselves. It is a way to clarify one's thoughts, feelings, and more.

Each person has to deal with different things in their life. These occurrences vary between individuals but they all need to be dealt with in some way, especially when what has happened is quite negative. There might be many methods of dealing with such things, lessening the impact on life, and to even make them into something positive.

Whether a person is having sessions with a psychologist or psychiatrist, there might be different types of therapies employed. One quite common choice is writing in a journal. This entails a person writing down what has happened during the day, how the individual felt, and so on. Of course, an individual doesn't need to be seeing a professional to use this method. It can be done as a form of group or self-therapy also.

Having this activity as a form of treating various conditions is a way to clarify what the person is dealing with or how they are felling. They can take the events apart in their mind as they write and reconstruct them to help them make more sense. In a way, this can help the patient to understand their emotions.

The types of conditions and problems the technique may be used with are many. Depression and anxiety are two of the issues but there are others. Addictions, illnesses and relationship problems are other situations but there may be more.

There is no particular way of doing this. In most cases, it is just about describing what is going on in the person's head. It includes writing about one's inner thoughts and feelings. It is a way to express oneself without feeling judged. Doing this can bring about a greater understanding and a way to vent emotions.

Of course, this activity is not only for writing down the negative feelings. Patients are generally encouraged to write about their positive feelings as well. This can help to emphasize these emotions and increase them. In fact, writing about these things can help the healing process increase in speed.

When dealing with traumatic experiences, there are various therapies that may be used to assist in the time spent healing. Writing in a journal is often one of them whether a person is coping with depression, anxiety, or otherwise. This technique can be used with a professional, in a group or with oneself. It is often utilized to understand the occurrences, emotions and other parts of the experiences. Even though negative things may be written about, it is also encouraged to include positive things as this can speed up the healing process.
