3 Reasons A Baby Cant Sleep

By Glennon Doley

No matter how good a sleeper your toddler is, you're bound to run into a problem or two from time to time. Those instances may happen when your baby grows to an older age, they do have sleep problems such as sleepwalking. These temporary sleep problems will not last forever, however, when you find your children having these sleep problems, your sleep will be affected too.

Babies are born with many different reflexes. You will know that your baby is having a normal startle or "moro" reflex because you will see your baby bring his arms out wide before bringing them back together. The moro reflex only occurs in a baby for that moment, however, it can easily disturb their sleep. Some babies can drift back to sleep when their startle reflex wakes them, but other babies will not be able doing this and they will wake from sleeping and begin to cry. After 5-6 months the moro reflex will go away.

When trying to lay them down in the crib, do be very stable and gentle. Refrain from any sudden movements and make your baby feel supported by holding them close to you. Swaddling is another way to help make them feel safe and supported.

Your baby has not learned the skill of putting himself to sleep. Do you notice that we suddenly wake up without knowing why. Even after waking up, we will just take it that nothing has happened and go back to sleep. Babies who have always been put to sleep may not develop the skills necessary to put themselves back to sleep once they've woken in the middle of the night.

What should you do? Let the baby learn how to sleep himself instead. Knowing how to sleep does not come naturally, you have to guide your children so that they will know how to sleep on their own. You can try to make him feel comfortable with something else like a blanket. So that you can leave him with the blanket when he is going to sleep. The hope is that the toy will remind him of pleasant, comforting times with you and when he awakes he will find the toy, snuggle it, and drift back to sleep.

You may find your baby sleeping all day in the day, however, they do not even go to sleep at night. The problem here may be that your baby has little or no light perception and cannot differentiate between day and night.

How do you solve it? It is paramount to teach them when has the night come. This means that you will want to establish a pretty strict night time routine so she will understand that the evening hours have begun. You can always take out a toy during night time, or you can implement a set of routine for your little one. Then, when you begin to sing one of these nighttime songs, for example, your baby will know that it's getting late and almost time for bed.

Let your baby know about the sounds that only happens at night. I always bring Ivan out to listen to the crickets chirping during the evenings. These sounds help to calm him down. He will then be able to identify that night has come when he hears a cricket sound.
