Cute As A Teddy Bear Puppies For Sale

By Jocelyn Davidson

Also called Shichons or Zuchons, Teddy Bear puppies are adorable, sweet, playful, friendly. They're an easy to care for little dog, 11-16 pounds full grown. With a mix of colors and patterns, each is a unique and adorable individual. Zuchons want to please. They're stars in obedience classes. If you're looking for a small, cuddly, sociable, and loyal little dog, take a look at Teddy Bear puppies for sale.

Weighing no more than 16 pounds, Zuchons are a great choice for families living in small quarters. They can be great travel companion for RV travelers. They're quiet little dogs but will bark to announce newcomers. Exercise needs can be met with a neighborhood stroll, games in the backyard, a trip to the dog park. What they don't like is to be left alone for long periods of time.

If you're looking for a dog with a docile and gentle disposition who will enjoy a household with children, this little guy could be what you're looking for. They're good with other household pets. They housebreak and obedience train easily. If you want a cute and intelligent little dog to teach tricks, this little pup might be the breed you're looking for.

Expect your Zuchon to live 15, maybe even 16 years. Most weigh between 11 and 16 pounds. They have large, round eyes that will melt your heart. The soft coat doesn't shed. This is a hypoallergenic dog, a great choice for those with allergies to dogs. Regular brushing is necessary to keep the fluffy coat from tangling. A bath and haircut is necessary every 4-6 weeks. The most popular cut for this little guy is, no surprise here, the teddy bear cut.

Some breeders are now creating mini Teddy Bears by crossing a Shih Tzu with a Maltese. They look like their miniature namesake, and have the same endearing personality and looks, but they're tiny, less than 13 pounds. They look and act like puppies all the days of their life.

This breed has a short muzzle resulting in a sensitivity to heat. Both parent breeds are healthy lineages, so this is generally a healthy, long living dog. Like most small dogs, they are at risk for knee problems. Also watch for eye problems and skin problems. Shih Tzu's are prone to breathing problems. Usually the mix with the Bichon lengthens the muzzle enough to reduce or eliminate this health problem. Avoid dental problems with regular brushing and feeding a high quality dry food.

This designer dog was first bred and named around 1994. It's not a purebred. It's not recognized by the AKC. There's no breed standard. The name Teddy Bear usually refers to a hybrid with a Shih Tzu and Bichon Frise for parents. Some also have Poodle or Yorkie heritage. Frequently Zuchons are bred to other Zuchons.

With no breed registry, there are no breed requirements or standards, just general breeding practice and general observations. Beware of puppy mill breeders who don't document and breed carefully to avoid genetic health problems. They don't provide good health care to their animals, and they don't spend time socializing the puppies. It's always best if you can visit the breeder and observe the conditions of the facility, the health and behavior of the parents and the puppies. Ask the breeder for health records for the parents and the puppies. Ask about a warranty, health guarantee, buy back policy.
