Finding Black Labrador Retriever Puppies For Sale In Ohio

By Kerri Stout

Pet ownership is a huge responsibility and interested parties should take the time to learn all about the breed they are considering. Each one will have characteristics that are typical of their kind and it is important that a person find a dog that has a personality that is compatible with their own, as well as their lifestyle, living arrangements and family situation. Breeders of black Labrador retriever puppies for sale in Ohio can be very helpful.

Because of their high intelligence, strength and obedient nature, this breed is often used in service occupations. They are famous as companions for hunters, as seeing eye dogs and as key members for search and rescue units. Labs are known for their dutiful discipline and the control that it takes to perform such duties, but they also possess the gentleness required to live with families.

Labs are never happier than when in the company of their humans and though hyperactivity is rare, they tend to show it through excitement. Their loyalty is infamous and their naturally gentle temperament is such that they have an extreme tolerance for young children and their tendencies to play roughly. The animals will bark threatening if they sense danger to their people but it is a farce and they do not have the aggressive capabilities it takes to serve as guard dogs.

Their natural inclination to retrieve items is how they got the latter part of their title. They will run and fetch anything that someone takes the time to toss for them, be it sticks, balls, bones or toys. Labs may even collect a variety of things that have been left unattended and stockpile them as gifts for their humans.

Another thing the breed is known for is their affinity for water. They get excited by the sight of a large body of water and will literally jump at the chance to be in it, especially if they have the opportunity to combine it with their passion for retrieval. Pet owners who have swimming pools should put precautions in place, or not leave the animals unattended in the area unless they are sure there is a way for them to climb back out since dogs can not pull themselves up and over the edge.

When a male Lab reaches adulthood, he may measure about 24" at the shoulders, with females growing only a little slighter. 60-75 pounds is a proper healthy weight for a full grown specimen of this breed. Considered of mid range size, their bodies are strong and sturdy, making them perfect for serving in a professional capacity and very fit as a beloved pet.

Moderate in their shedding, the grooming requirements of this breed are minimal. To maintain their cleanliness, all that is normally required is a weekly session with a slicker brush to remove all the hairs that are loose. They have coats that do not require shampooing except for times when the dog has found its way into situations that result in offensive smells.

If a pet that is playful, obedient, protective without aggression is what one seeks, then a Lab is a choice one should seriously consider. They can be great companions for adults and loving, gentle playmates for children. If proper exercise is given regularly, they are not known to partake of destructive behaviors and their grooming requirements are simple.
