Parents Often Pursue A Medical Billing And Coding Certification Online

By Lisa Williamson

In this day of the Internet, there are many people who seek a medical billing and coding certification online. Often these people are parents seeking an alternative to the low incomes which are often all that is available to them. By pursuing employment alternatives, they are better able to pursue a more lucrative career path that allows them a variety of other benefits.

Anyone who has paid attention knows that college tuition has gone up thousands of percentage points while incomes continue to stagnate. Rather than going into tens of thousands of dollars in debt, high school graduates often seek a less expensive option. Not only that, but by obtaining a professional certificate, they are often guaranteed employment in their chosen field.

For a young person working a low-paying job, a certification program is not impossible to save up for. The tuition charged is based on the course being obtained more than individual income. There are some programs which offer financial aid, however, one can find programs available that cost around two thousand dollars. So long as the student passes their course, the certificate received is treated the same whether they spent a thousand or ten thousand dollars to obtain it.

Young parents find these certificate options are an excellent way to get out of the low-wage slump. Not only that, but they are often able to work from their own home rather than spending extra money commuting to a job. This also saves them from the ever-increasing cost of what often turns out to be poor child care, and it is a savings that amounts to many hundreds of dollars each month.

By deciding to telework, the young parents are able to be there for their children. Anyone who has raised a child in day care knows that these centers are not always the best option for their young one. In this way, a small child can grow up with the safety and comfort of being at home, and the parent is still making an income that helps provide for the household.

Anyone who transcribes medical reports can tell how difficult it is to make a reasonable wage when working by production. It is not unusual for one to start out as a transcriptionist, but pursue a different certificate within the field in order to make an hourly wage. Production-based work is nearly always done as an independent contractor, and at six to ten cents per line, one has trouble even making minimum wage.

There are some benefits to being an independent contractor, the primary one being flexibility. However, young parents most often wish for full-time employment with a good company. This enables them to work from home while still having access to health insurance, paid vacations, and 401k investment plans; all of which used to be associated with on-site employment only.

The projected employment opportunities available going forward often seem grim, but any expert can tell you that jobs in the field of medicine expect to remain stable for the foreseeable future. Unfortunately, not everyone is able to be a doctor, nurse, or CNA at a hospital or nursing home. Some cannot handle the pressure of such an environment, and anyone with small children will most likely want to avoid daily contact with sick individuals.
